About Fix Error Code
Fix Error Code explains what a trouble code means and what to do next. It covers OBD-II diagnostic trouble codes from cars and light trucks and the error codes shown by household appliances: dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, refrigerators, ovens and ranges, microwaves, air conditioners and heat pumps, and gas boilers.
The site is written for three markets – the United States, Germany and the Netherlands – and each language version is written for its own readers. That means US pages use miles, °F, psi and dollars and refer to smog checks and emissions tests, while the German and Dutch pages use metric units, euros and the local inspection systems (HU/AU and APK).
What you will find on a code page
Every code page follows the same structure so you can find answers quickly:
- What the code means, in plain language, and what the control unit actually measured to set it
- A severity rating from 1 to 5 and, for vehicles, whether it is reasonable to keep driving
- Likely causes, ranked from most to least likely, with editorial likelihood estimates
- Diagnostic steps in a sensible order, starting with the quick and inexpensive checks
- Repair options with rough cost ranges and a DIY difficulty rating
- For vehicles, what the code means for your inspection; for appliances, how to reset the code and when to call a technician
- Frequently asked questions and the sources the information is based on
How the pages are made
Pages are generated from a structured database of codes rather than written as loose articles. Each record holds specific data fields – meaning, causes, steps, costs, safety flags – and the descriptions are written in-house. We never copy text from service manuals, owner's manuals or forums. Code identifiers and definitions come from standards and manufacturers' public documentation and are cross-checked; codes that rely on a single manufacturer source are marked as unverified. The details are explained in our methodology and editorial policy.
Before a page is allowed into search engines, an automatic quality check makes sure it contains enough page-specific information and is not a near-copy of a similar page. Pages that don't pass stay out of search results until they are improved.
What this site is not
We cannot see your car or your appliance. A code tells you where the control unit noticed a problem, not always which part has failed. Our pages help you understand the situation, carry out safe basic checks and talk to a mechanic or technician on an equal footing. Work on gas appliances, mains electricity, microwave internals, refrigerant circuits, airbags, brakes and hybrid or EV high-voltage systems belongs in professional hands. Please read our disclaimer.
How the site is funded
Fix Error Code is free to use and is financed by advertising (Google AdSense) on content pages. Ads are clearly separated from the editorial content and have no influence on what we write. There are no affiliate links to specific shops and no paid placements or sponsored rankings.
