A code is a starting point

A trouble code tells you which circuit or function the control unit found out of range. It does not always tell you which part has failed. The same code can have different causes on different models, and appliance codes with the same number can mean completely different things from one brand to another. Estimates are estimates

• Recall and complaint information from public databases is a pointer only. Check your vehicle identification number or model number with the manufacturer or the official recall service.

• Gas appliances – if you smell gas, do not operate switches or appliances, leave the building and call your gas utility or the emergency services from outside. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone into fresh air.
• Mains electricity – always unplug an appliance or switch off its circuit breaker before any permitted user check.
• Microwave ovens – never open the casing; internal parts can hold a dangerous charge even when unplugged.
• Refrigerant circuits – handling refrigerant requires certified technicians.
• Airbags and brakes – errors can cost lives.
• Hybrid and electric vehicles – high-voltage components (usually marked with orange cables) can be lethal.

If a vehicle shows a flashing check engine light, a red warning light, loss of braking or steering assistance, smoke or a fuel smell, stop in a safe place and get professional help.
