Possible causes
- Damaged harness or corroded connector between the sensor and the computer; on V engines this sub-harness often runs under the intake manifold and cracks from heat
- Failed knock sensor (cracked piezo element or internal open circuit)
- Sensor loose or torqued incorrectly, so it can't pick up block vibration properly
- Coolant or oil pooled around a sensor mounted in the engine valley, corroding the terminal
