On a diesel, the wait-to-start light (a coil-shaped symbol) tells the driver when the glow plugs have heated up enough to crank. P0381 does not mean the glow plugs have failed. It means the engine computer found an open or short in the circuit it uses to switch that indicator. The code mainly appears on engines where the computer drives the lamp over its own wire, as on many older TDIs, Powerstrokes and Ram diesels. On newer vehicles the instrument cluster usually lights the symbol after a network message, and a fault there tends to set a communication code instead. The practical risk is small: the engine still preheats, but you can no longer see when it is ready, so cold starts get harder if you crank too early.
Can I keep driving? Safe to drive. On cold mornings, turn the key to run, wait about 5 to 10 seconds before cranking, as the light would normally tell you to, and the engine should start as usual.

Diagnosis step by step
Watch the key-on bulb check
Turn the key to run with the engine cold and watch the cluster. If every other warning light comes on but the wait-to-start symbol doesn't, the problem is on that one circuit. If several lights are dark, check the cluster fuse and connector first.

Confirm the glow system itself works
Don't assume the plugs are fine because only the indicator code is stored. With a cold engine, check that the glow relay clicks at key-on or that the plug feed gets voltage. Also look for P0380 or cylinder glow plug codes stored with it.

Find out who drives the lamp
Check the wiring diagram. If a dedicated wire runs from the engine computer to the cluster, P0381 is about that wire and its bulb. If the cluster lights the symbol from a network message, focus on the cluster and its data connection instead.

With the ignition off, unplug the computer and cluster connectors and measure the indicator wire end to end: well under 1 ohm is good. Then check it to ground and to battery positive. A short to ground often makes the light stay on permanently, and an open wire keeps it dark.

On older clusters the indicator bulb can be replaced once the cluster is out. Clean the cluster connector pins and check for pushed-back terminals. On clusters with soldered LEDs, the cluster has to be repaired by a specialist or replaced.

How long should I wait before cranking without the light?
On most diesels, 5 to 10 seconds after turning the key to run is enough in moderate cold. In hard frost, cycling the key once more before cranking helps. With a warm engine you can crank right away.
My glow light flashes while driving. Is that P0381?
Usually not. On several makes, especially older VW TDIs, a flashing glow plug light means the computer has stored an engine fault of some other kind. Read the codes: the flashing light is the symptom, not the fault.
Is P0381 worth fixing?
Yes, but it isn't urgent. The light is your only cue that the engine is ready to start on cold days, and some cars won't clear their warning lights until the circuit is repaired.
