At idle the engine computer has a target speed and opens the idle air control valve or the electronic throttle wider when rpm sags. P0506 sets when actual idle stays below that target, commonly by 100 rpm or more, even though the computer has already added as much idle air as its limits allow. In other words, the engine is getting too little air or is being asked to do too much work. A carbon ring around the throttle plate is by far the most common reason, followed by lost idle learning after a battery disconnect, heavy accessory or charging load, and an engine that is simply running weak.

Can I keep driving? Drivable, but the engine may stumble or stall when you stop, especially with the A/C on – and power steering and brake assist get heavy if it dies. Shift to Neutral at long stops if idle gets very low, and have it cleaned or checked soon.

Try this first – 5-minute fix

  1. Clean the throttle body With the engine off, remove the intake duct and wipe the black ring off the throttle plate edge and bore using throttle body cleaner on a rag. On electronic throttles, don't force the plate or soak the motor; hold it open gently with the key off.
  2. Let the idle relearn After cleaning or a battery disconnect, idle the engine with all accessories off until fully warm and the cooling fan has cycled, or run the scan-tool idle relearn your vehicle requires. Otherwise the computer keeps using old, now-too-small airflow values.
  3. Check battery and charging With the engine running, battery voltage should sit around 13.5–14.7 volts. A weak or sulfated battery keeps the alternator loaded at idle and drags rpm down; test or replace it if it fails a load test.

Symptoms

  • Warm idle noticeably low, for example around 500 rpm where 700 is normal
  • Engine shakes at stoplights and may stall when the A/C kicks on
  • Idle dips further when you turn the steering wheel at a standstill
  • Headlights or dash lights flicker at idle
  • Vibration through the seat and steering wheel in Drive at a stop

Possible causes

Ranked by how often each cause is behind this code (editorial estimate).

  1. Carbon ring on the throttle plate and bore choking off idle air 34%
  2. Idle not relearned after a battery disconnect, throttle cleaning or software update 16%
  3. Heavy load at idle – weak battery making the alternator work hard, dragging A/C compressor or power steering pump 14%
  4. Sluggish or sticking idle air control valve on older engines 12%
  5. Engine running weak: misfire, low compression or restricted exhaust 10%
  6. Large unmetered air leak on a MAF engine, leaning the mixture so much it stumbles 8%
  7. Blocked air filter or collapsed intake duct 6%

Diagnosis step by step

Diagnostic flow: P05061Read desired vs actual idle and idleair command2Isolate electrical and accessoryload3Check misfire counters and fueltrims4Vacuum gauge test5Verify after cleaning and relearn
  1. Read desired vs actual idle and idle air command

With the engine fully warm, compare desired and actual rpm with IAC counts or throttle opening. If the computer is already at its upper limit of idle air and rpm is still low, the problem is restriction or load, not a control fault.

    Tools: OBD-II scanner

  2. Isolate electrical and accessory load

Watch idle as you turn the A/C, lights and rear defroster on and off. A big rpm drop with the A/C points at a dragging compressor; low charging voltage or a battery that won't hold charge points at the electrical side.

    Tools: Multimeter, OBD-II scanner

  3. Check misfire counters and fuel trims

Look for misfire counts at idle and large positive fuel trims. Misfires make the engine produce less torque at idle; lean trims that shrink at higher rpm suggest unmetered air.

    Tools: OBD-II scanner

  4. Vacuum gauge test

A healthy warm engine usually shows a steady 17–21 inHg at idle. A low but steady reading suggests timing or compression problems; a reading that slowly falls when held at 2,500 rpm points to a restricted exhaust or catalytic converter.

    Tools: Vacuum gauge

  5. Verify after cleaning and relearn

Clear the code and road-test with several stops, including A/C on. Watch that the idle air command drops back into a normal middle range – that confirms the restriction is gone.

    Tools: OBD-II scanner

Notes by brand

Nissan

Many Nissan gasoline engines with an electronic throttle need a specific idle air volume learn after throttle cleaning or battery disconnect. Skipping it is a well-known cause of low, unstable idle; the procedure is timing-sensitive, so a scan tool makes it far easier.

Emissions / smog test impact

Will fail

With the check engine light on, the car fails an OBD smog check. A very low or unstable idle can also cause misfires that raise emissions, so fix the cause before retesting.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my idle low after a new battery?

The engine computer lost its learned idle airflow values and has to relearn them. Until it does, idle can sit low or stumble; a warm idle with accessories off, or the manufacturer's relearn, usually fixes it.

What's the difference between P0506 and P0507?

P0506 means idle is too low – the engine isn't getting enough air or is overloaded. P0507 means idle is too high, which points to extra air leaking in. The fixes are almost opposite.

Can a bad alternator cause P0506?

Indirectly. The alternator loads the engine more when charging a weak battery or when its own bearings or regulator are failing. If idle recovers when you disconnect high loads, check the charging system.

How often should I clean the throttle body?

There's no fixed interval. Engines with heavy crankcase vapor or lots of short trips build carbon faster; cleaning when idle starts to sag, or at major services, is a reasonable approach.
