The PCM constantly compares the throttle angle it commands with the angle the two throttle position sensors report back. P2101 sets when the gap between the two stays too large for too long, or when the motor needs far more drive effort than normal to get there, even though the circuit itself isn't open or shorted. In practice that means the plate is dragging, the motor or its plastic reduction gears are worn, or the electrical signal is being disturbed intermittently. Carbon and oil film in the bore, a tired throttle body, loose connector pins and low system voltage are the usual suspects. It is especially familiar on Ford, Nissan and Chrysler-group vehicles.
Can I keep driving? Often drivable, but reduced-power mode can kick in without warning and the engine may stall at stops. Avoid highway merges and passing until it is fixed, and don't ignore it if the car suddenly loses power in traffic.
How to read P2101
- P Powertrain
- 2 Generic (SAE)
- 1 Fuel & air metering
- 01 Specific fault
Symptoms
- Sudden drop to reduced power, often cleared by restarting the engine
- Delayed or jerky response when you press the gas pedal
- Idle that surges, hunts or dips low at stops
- Stalling when coming to a stop or shifting into gear
- Wrench, ETC or reduced-power message plus the check engine light
- Problem worse on cold mornings or in wet weather
Possible causes
Ranked by how often each cause is behind this code (editorial estimate).
- Carbon and oil sludge in the throttle bore making the plate drag
- Worn throttle body: tired motor, worn gears or wear on the internal position sensor track
- Intermittent connector or harness fault at the throttle body (loose pins, moisture)
- Low system voltage from a weak battery, charging fault or poor engine grounds
- Throttle not relearned after cleaning, battery disconnect or replacement
- PCM software calibration issue fixed by an update
Diagnosis step by step
Compare commanded and actual throttle
In live data, watch commanded throttle and both throttle position sensors while someone presses the pedal slowly and then quickly. Actual should follow within a fraction of a second; a lag, overshoot or flat spot at the same angle every time points at the throttle body.
Tools: OBD-II scanner
Look inside the throttle bore
Ignition off and key out of the car, remove the intake duct and inspect the plate edge and bore. A black ring where the plate seals, or a sticky oil film from the PCV system, is enough to slow the motor down.
Tools: Flashlight
Feel the plate movement gently
Still with the ignition off, ease the plate open with a finger and let it return. It should move smoothly against spring pressure without gritty or tight spots; never lever it with a tool or force it past the stop, because that strips the plastic gears.
Tools: Gloves
Check battery, charging and grounds
A rested battery should show about 12.4–12.7 V, and 13.5–14.7 V with the engine running. Measure voltage drop between the battery negative and the engine block while cranking; more than about 0.3 V indicates a poor ground that can starve the throttle motor.
Tools: Multimeter
Wiggle-test the connector with data running
With the engine idling and live data on screen, gently flex the throttle body harness and connector. Any jump in throttle position readings or a new stall points to a terminal or wire problem, not the throttle body itself.
Tools: OBD-II scanner
Clean, relearn and check for software
If the bore was dirty, clean it with throttle body cleaner sprayed on a rag, not into the motor housing, then perform the throttle and idle relearn for your vehicle. Ask a dealer whether a PCM update exists for throttle control complaints on your model.
Tools: Soft brush, OBD-II scanner

Notes by brand
Ford
On many Fords with electronic throttle, P2101 arrives together with the wrench light and reduced power. Technicians typically check the throttle body connector and clean the bore first; a worn throttle body is the most common replacement part.
Nissan
Nissan labels P2101 as an electric throttle control function fault. Besides the throttle body, the throttle motor relay and its feed from the underhood power module are part of the check, and an idle air volume relearn is required after cleaning.
Jeep
Jeep and other Chrysler-group models with electronic throttle log P2101 fairly often. After confirming power, grounds and the connector, throttle body replacement followed by a key-on relearn usually cures it.

Emissions / smog test impact
Will fail
P2101 lights the check engine light, so an OBD-based emissions test will fail. After the fix, drive a few normal trips so the readiness monitors are set before you retest.
Frequently asked questions
Why does restarting the engine make the problem go away?
Restarting clears the reduced-power strategy until the PCM sees the throttle lag again. The code stays stored, and the fault returns because the plate or motor still isn't keeping up.
Is cleaning the throttle body enough for P2101?
It fixes a good share of cases where carbon is visible, provided you relearn the throttle afterward. If the bore is clean and the code returns, the motor, gears or connector are the next suspects.
Can a weak battery really cause P2101?
Yes. The throttle motor needs strong current to move quickly, and low voltage or a poor ground slows it down. The PCM only sees a slow throttle and blames the actuator.
What's the difference between P2101 and P2119?
Both describe the throttle not doing what it is told. P2101 focuses on the motor circuit and drive effort, while P2119 is set by the throttle body's position check; many cars log them together and the fixes overlap.
