Fuel & Air Metering Trouble Codes: List & Fixes

These codes (mostly P00xx–P02xx) cover how the engine computer measures incoming air and meters fuel: the mass airflow and manifold pressure sensors, oxygen sensors, fuel trim, fuel pressure and injectors. Lean codes such as P0171 and P0174 are very often caused by an unmetered air leak – a cracked intake hose or vacuum line – rather than a failed sensor. Check hoses and the air filter housing before buying parts.

P0243 Powertrain The engine computer found a fault in the electrical circuit of the solenoid that controls… Moderate P0263 Powertrain Cylinder 1 is producing noticeably more or less power than the others, beyond what fuel trim… Moderate P0266 Powertrain The engine computer can't even out cylinder 2 with fuel corrections; its balance rate is past… Moderate P0269 Powertrain Cylinder 3 isn't pulling its weight, or is pulling too hard, and the fuel correction for it… Moderate P0272 Powertrain The ECU can't balance cylinder 4 against the rest anymore; its fuel correction is outside… Moderate P0275 Powertrain The fuel correction for cylinder 5 is past its limit. Only engines with five or more cylinders… Moderate P0299 Powertrain The turbo or supercharger isn't building the boost pressure the engine computer is asking for. Moderate P052E Powertrain The crankcase ventilation regulator isn't controlling crankcase pressure properly – often… Moderate P1128 Volkswagen · Powertrain VW's part-load fuel adaptation has maxed out adding fuel on bank 1 – the engine runs lean as… Moderate P1233 Ford · Powertrain The Ford PCM lost the status signal from the fuel pump driver module, so fuel pump control… Moderate P1259 Honda · Powertrain The PCM saw the VTEC solenoid or VTEC oil pressure switch misbehave on an older Honda VTEC… Moderate P1272 Nissan · Powertrain The front air/fuel ratio sensor on bank 1 isn't sending a usable, moving signal to the Nissan… Moderate P1285 Ford · Powertrain Ford's cylinder head temperature sensor reports the engine is overheating. Pull over and shut… Critical P1289 Ford · Powertrain The CHT sensor signal on your Ford is stuck near 5 volts, which the PCM reads as an impossibly… Moderate P1297 Volkswagen · Powertrain Boost is escaping between turbo and throttle body – usually a split hose or a leaking diverter… Moderate P1299 Ford · Powertrain The engine got so hot that the Ford PCM is shutting off fuel to cylinders to save it. Stop… Critical P1354 Toyota · Powertrain On a Toyota V6 or V8, the bank 2 intake camshaft isn't reaching the timing the ECM commands. Moderate P1604 Toyota · Powertrain Toyota's ECM recorded a start that took too long, failed, or died within seconds of firing. Moderate P2006 Powertrain The intake swirl or runner flaps stay shut when the ECU wants them open, choking airflow… Moderate P2146 Powertrain The shared power feed for one group of injectors is open, so every injector in that group has… High P2149 Powertrain The shared supply to the second injector group dropped out, often an intermittent wiring fault… High P2177 Powertrain Bank 1 goes lean once the engine is above idle, so the PCM keeps adding fuel at cruise… Moderate P2178 Powertrain Above idle, bank 1 carries more fuel than the PCM asked for, and pulling fuel out no longer… Moderate P2188 Powertrain At idle, bank 1 gets extra fuel from somewhere the PCM doesn't control; above idle the mixture… Moderate P219A Powertrain One cylinder on bank 1 runs clearly richer or leaner than the others, even if the average looks… Moderate P219B Powertrain One cylinder on bank 2 runs off the mixture of the other cylinders on that side of the engine. Moderate P2228 Powertrain The baro sensor signal is below its valid range, as if the car were far higher than any road… Moderate P2262 Powertrain The engine computer commanded boost but saw almost none, pointing to a mechanical turbo… Moderate P2263 Powertrain Boost isn't tracking its target closely enough: too low, too high or too slow to respond. Moderate P2293 Powertrain The second fuel pressure control stage can't hold its target; on VW/Audi 2.0T often… Moderate
