Fuel & Air Metering Trouble Codes: List & Fixes

These codes (mostly P00xx–P02xx) cover how the engine computer measures incoming air and meters fuel: the mass airflow and manifold pressure sensors, oxygen sensors, fuel trim, fuel pressure and injectors. Lean codes such as P0171 and P0174 are very often caused by an unmetered air leak – a cracked intake hose or vacuum line – rather than a failed sensor. Check hoses and the air filter housing before buying parts.

P1281 Jeep · Powertrain Your Jeep's engine didn't reach operating temperature in time, most often due to a stuck-open… Low P1285 Ford · Powertrain Ford's cylinder head temperature sensor reports the engine is overheating. Pull over and shut… Critical P1289 Ford · Powertrain The CHT sensor signal on your Ford is stuck near 5 volts, which the PCM reads as an impossibly… Moderate P1297 Volkswagen · Powertrain Boost is escaping between turbo and throttle body – usually a split hose or a leaking diverter… Moderate P1299 Ford · Powertrain The engine got so hot that the Ford PCM is shutting off fuel to cylinders to save it. Stop… Critical P1354 Toyota · Powertrain On a Toyota V6 or V8, the bank 2 intake camshaft isn't reaching the timing the ECM commands. Moderate P1518 Ford · Powertrain Ford's intake runner plates didn't close when commanded, so low-rpm torque suffers. Often… Low P1604 Toyota · Powertrain Toyota's ECM recorded a start that took too long, failed, or died within seconds of firing. Moderate P1656 Toyota · Powertrain Toyota's ECM has found an open or short in the electrical circuit of the VVT-i oil control… Low P2004 Powertrain The intake runner or tumble flaps stay open when told to close, usually a vacuum or linkage… Low P2006 Powertrain The intake swirl or runner flaps stay shut when the ECU wants them open, choking airflow… Moderate P2009 Powertrain The runner or tumble flap solenoid circuit reads too low: a short to ground, an open coil… Low P200A Powertrain The ECU switched the intake runner flaps but the system didn't respond the way it should. Low P2015 Powertrain The sensor on the intake manifold flaps reports a position that doesn't match what the ECU… Low P2096 Powertrain The sensor behind the catalytic converter keeps reporting lean, and the ECU has run out of room… Low P2097 Powertrain The sensor behind the converter keeps seeing rich exhaust, and the ECU can't lean the mixture… Low P2146 Powertrain The shared power feed for one group of injectors is open, so every injector in that group has… High P2149 Powertrain The shared supply to the second injector group dropped out, often an intermittent wiring fault… High P2177 Powertrain Bank 1 goes lean once the engine is above idle, so the PCM keeps adding fuel at cruise… Moderate P2178 Powertrain Above idle, bank 1 carries more fuel than the PCM asked for, and pulling fuel out no longer… Moderate P2181 Powertrain The engine isn't warming up or holding temperature the way the computer's model says it should. Low P2187 Powertrain Bank 1 runs lean at idle but recovers once rpm rises, the classic fingerprint of unmetered air. Low P2188 Powertrain At idle, bank 1 gets extra fuel from somewhere the PCM doesn't control; above idle the mixture… Moderate P2195 Powertrain The front O2 or air-fuel sensor keeps reading lean while the rear sensor shows the engine isn't… Low P2196 Powertrain The front sensor on bank 1 keeps claiming rich, so the PCM strips out fuel the engine actually… Low P2197 Powertrain The upstream sensor on the bank without cylinder 1 reads lean while the other checks say that… Low P2198 Powertrain Bank 2's front sensor keeps claiming rich, so the PCM leans out that side of the engine more… Low P219A Powertrain One cylinder on bank 1 runs clearly richer or leaner than the others, even if the average looks… Moderate P219B Powertrain One cylinder on bank 2 runs off the mixture of the other cylinders on that side of the engine. Moderate P2226 Powertrain The engine computer can't get a valid reading from its barometric (ambient air pressure) sensor. Low
