U0401 is the opposite of a dead connection: the engine computer (ECM/PCM) is talking, but a listening module such as the transmission, ABS/stability, body or steering module decided that one or more of its messages are implausible. The PCM tags its broadcast values (engine torque, accelerator position, rpm, coolant temperature) with a validity flag, and when the PCM itself has a sensor or throttle fault it marks those values as invalid on purpose. That is why U0401 is usually a messenger for a problem already stored inside the engine computer. Less often the data is garbled by low voltage, a poor PCM ground, mismatched software after a reflash or tuner, or a replacement PCM that was never set up for the vehicle.
Can I keep driving? Most cars stay drivable, but stability and traction control are often switched off and the engine or transmission may be in a reduced-power mode. Drive gently, avoid slippery roads if the traction light is on, and read the engine codes before anything else.
How to read U0401
- U Network
- 0 Generic (SAE)
- 4 Module Communication
- 01 Specific fault
Symptoms
- Check engine light together with traction/stability warnings (e.g. 'Service StabiliTrak' or 'Service AdvanceTrac')
- Reduced engine power or a dead-feeling throttle pedal
- Cruise control and auto start-stop unavailable
- Firm or oddly timed shifts because the transmission ignores engine torque data
- Tachometer or temperature gauge jumping around on some models
- Code appears in the TCM, ABS or BCM memory while the engine module shows its own P-codes
Possible causes
Ranked by how often each cause is behind this code (editorial estimate).
- An engine-side fault stored in the PCM (pedal/throttle correlation, crank sensor, MAF, misfire) that makes the PCM flag its own signals as invalid
- PCM software mismatch: missed update, interrupted reflash or an aftermarket tuner/performance programmer
- Low or unstable system voltage from a weak battery, bad terminals or a charging fault
- Replacement or used PCM not programmed with the correct VIN and configuration
- High resistance at the PCM grounds or connector corrupting its messages
- Internal PCM fault producing wrong values
Diagnosis step by step
Note which module stored U0401
Do a full-system scan and write down every module holding U0401 plus its freeze frame. If only the ABS module stores it, the complaint is usually torque or pedal data; if the TCM stores it, shift-related torque values are more likely involved.
Tools: OBD-II scanner
Fix the engine codes first
Open the engine module and deal with any P-codes it holds, especially throttle, pedal, crank/cam, MAF and misfire faults. Once the PCM no longer flags its outputs as invalid, U0401 in the other modules usually stops returning after the codes are cleared and the car is driven.
Tools: OBD-II scanner
Check battery and charging voltage
Resting voltage should be around 12.6 V, cranking should not dip below about 9.6 V and running voltage should sit between 13.5 and 14.7 V. A module that browns out during cranking can read garbage from the PCM for a moment and log U0401 as history.
Tools: Multimeter
Voltage-drop the PCM grounds
With the engine running and the load on (headlights, blower, rear defrost), measure between the PCM ground pins and the battery negative post. More than about 0.1 to 0.2 V means a corroded ground strap or eyelet that should be cleaned or repaired.
Tools: Multimeter, Flashlight
Verify PCM software and setup
Compare the PCM calibration with the latest available from the manufacturer and ask whether a tuner or programmer was ever used. Return a tuned PCM to its stock file, and make sure a replacement PCM has the correct VIN, options and security learn completed.
Tools: OBD-II scanner
Clear, drive and re-scan
Clear codes in all modules, then drive through cold start, idle, light and heavy acceleration and a few stops. A code that comes back with no engine faults present points toward PCM software or an internal PCM problem.

Notes by brand
Chevrolet
On GM trucks and SUVs the brake module switches off StabiliTrak and traction control whenever the engine module reports a fault that stops it from reducing torque, so 'Service StabiliTrak' with a check engine light is typical. Diagnose the engine codes first; the stability system usually comes back on its own afterward.

Emissions / smog test impact
Depends
U0401 by itself doesn't turn on the check engine light, but the engine fault behind it usually does, and an active check engine light fails an OBD-based smog check. Fix the PCM codes and let the monitors complete before testing.
Frequently asked questions
How is U0401 different from U0100?
U0100 means the engine computer stopped talking altogether. U0401 means it is still talking, but a module received values it considers wrong or marked invalid, so the search starts inside the PCM rather than on the wiring to it.
Do I need a new engine computer?
Rarely. Most U0401 cases disappear once the engine sensor or throttle fault stored in the PCM is repaired, or once a software update is done. Replacing the PCM is only justified after power, grounds, software and engine codes have been checked.
Can a performance tuner cause U0401?
Yes. If modified tables send torque or pedal values the transmission or ABS module doesn't expect, those modules can flag them as invalid. Flashing back to the stock calibration is the first test.
Why did my traction control light come on with an engine problem?
Stability control needs to cut engine torque when a wheel slips. If the PCM says its torque data can't be trusted, the brake module disables traction and stability control until the engine fault is gone.
