Every time a Daikin ductless head powers up, its main board reads its own configuration – capacity, model data and what it is paired with – before it allows operation. A1 means that start-up routine failed and the board has declared itself unreliable. It is tempting to order a new board right away, but Daikin's own troubleshooting order starts elsewhere: a head that doesn't match the outdoor unit, a wiring or supply fault between the units, and poor power quality such as a voltage sag while the system boots. Only when those check out is the indoor board condemned. In practice, boards that do fail have usually seen a lightning-related surge, condensate dripping onto them or insects nesting in the control box.

Safety first · Consult a professional
The indoor unit's terminal block and board carry 208–230 V fed from the outdoor unit, even when the remote shows the system off. Don't remove the front panel or electrical cover, and never power up a board that has been wet in the hope it dries out – switch the breaker off and leave it off.

Fix it step by step
Confirm the code
A blinking head can mean dozens of things. Put the remote into its service check (Cancel held until "00" flashes), then advance one code at a time – the indoor unit answers the stored code with a steady beep. Wired controllers display A1 without any tricks.
Reboot the system from the outdoor side
Daikin clears A1 by removing power from the outdoor unit, which on most residential mini-splits also powers the head. Switch off the disconnect or breaker, wait five minutes so the boards discharge, and switch back on. An A1 caused by a sag during start-up often does not return.
Check that the units belong together
If a head was recently replaced, added to a multi-zone system or bought separately, read the model numbers on both nameplates. Ask the installer or a Daikin dealer to compare them against the official combination table – an unapproved pairing produces A1 even with a perfect board.

Look for water and pests from the outside
Check whether the indoor unit drips, whether the condensate hose outlet outside flows freely and whether ants or wasps are going in and out of the head. A blocked drain can back water up toward the control box. Photograph what you find, but keep the covers on.

Leave measurements to the technician
The technician checks the supply at the outdoor terminals, confirms 1-2-3 are landed correctly at both units and looks for voltage dropping when the compressor tries to start. Only when supply, wiring and combination pass is the indoor board replaced.
Make sure the new board is set up
On many Daikin heads a replacement board must be matched to the unit's capacity, for example by transferring a capacity-setting adaptor or setting jumpers as the kit instructions say. If that step is skipped, the brand-new board can throw A1 again.

When to call a technician
Book an HVAC technician when A1 survives a five-minute outdoor power reset, or right away if the head was wet or smells burnt. Check your warranty registration first – Daikin parts coverage in the US generally depends on the unit having been registered after installation.
Frequently asked questions
Does A1 automatically mean a new circuit board?
No. Daikin's checklist puts the unit combination, the wiring between units and the power supply ahead of the board. A good technician rules those out before charging you for a PCB.
Can I swap the indoor board myself?
It is not a good idea: the board sits at line voltage, many replacements need their capacity setting transferred, and a DIY repair can void the warranty. Leave it to a technician.
Why did A1 start after I replaced one head?
The new head may not be an approved match for the outdoor unit or for that multi-zone port, or the interconnect may have been landed wrong. Both show up as A1 before any hardware is actually faulty.
Will a surge protector prevent this?
It reduces the risk from utility spikes and nearby strikes, though nothing stops a direct hit. In storm-prone areas it is a cheap addition compared with a board replacement.
