Daikin AC / Heat Pump Error U4 – Causes & Fix
The indoor unit has lost its data link with the outdoor unit, so the system can't cool or heat.

In a Daikin ductless mini-split or heat pump, the indoor and outdoor units constantly exchange data over the signal wire in the interconnecting cable (terminal 3 on most residential models). When the indoor board stops receiving valid replies from the outdoor board, it shuts the compressor down and stores U4. The first thing to rule out is simply that the outdoor unit has no power – a tripped breaker or an opened disconnect. After that come loose or damaged wiring between the units and a failed outdoor control board, often after a lightning strike or power surge. On a new installation, crossed wires at the terminals are a classic cause.

Safety first · Consult a professional
Only check breakers and the outdoor disconnect switch. The terminals in the indoor and outdoor units carry 208–230 V, and inverter outdoor units hold a charge in their capacitors for several minutes after power-off – leave covers closed. Any refrigerant work requires an EPA 608-certified technician.
- Unplug the appliance or switch off the breaker before opening any panel. Mains voltage can kill.

Fix it step by step
Read the code properly
On many Daikin infrared remotes you hold the Cancel button (on some models the temperature button) for about 5 seconds until 00 flashes, then press repeatedly until the indoor unit gives a long beep – the code on the remote at that moment is the fault. Wired controllers show U4 directly.
Check power to the outdoor unit
Look for a tripped breaker for the outdoor unit in your main panel and check that the disconnect box next to the unit is switched on. With the system calling for cooling, listen for the outdoor fan or compressor.

Do a full power reset
Switch off the breaker(s) for the whole system for 10 minutes so both boards fully power down. Turn the power back on, wait a few minutes for the units to reconnect, then start the system with the remote.
Inspect the cable from the outside
Follow the line set and cable along the wall to the outdoor unit. Look for chewed, cut or UV-cracked insulation, a crushed conduit or water getting into the unit's terminal cover. Don't open any covers – just note what you see for the technician.

Think about what changed
If U4 started right after new installation or a unit swap, the wiring to terminals 1-2-3 may be crossed. If it followed a storm, a surge-damaged outdoor board or fuse is likely. Both need a technician with a meter.

When to call a technician
Call an HVAC technician if U4 returns after a full power reset while the outdoor unit clearly has power, or if the breaker trips again. Checking the signal on terminals 1-2-3 means working on live high-voltage terminals, which is strictly a job for a qualified tech.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep running the system with U4?
It won't cool or heat while the units can't talk. Switch it off at the remote so it doesn't keep retrying, and use other cooling or heating until it's fixed.
Why did U4 show up after a thunderstorm?
Surges often damage the outdoor board or blow its fuse, which cuts communication. A breaker that looks fine doesn't rule this out.
Is U4 a refrigerant problem?
No. U4 is purely a communication fault. Low refrigerant has its own code on Daikin systems (U0).
Only one of my indoor units shows U4 – what does that mean?
On a multi-zone system, one affected head points to that head's cable or board. If every head shows U4, the outdoor unit is the common factor.
