Samsung AC / Heat Pump Error E201 – Causes & Fix
E201: after power-up the outdoor unit couldn't find and register its indoor unit(s), so it won't start.

Samsung service manuals list E201 as a communication error between indoor and outdoor units caused by an installation problem – typically a failed tracking sequence or a mismatch in the number of connected indoor units. Every time power comes on, the outdoor unit searches the communication line for its indoor units and assigns them addresses. If that search finishes without finding the units it expects, the system refuses to start and shows E201. That's the key difference from E101, where a link that was already working drops out later. E201 therefore clusters around new installations, replaced indoor heads, multi-zone systems where cables and refrigerant lines were swapped between rooms, and indoor units that sit on their own circuit and happened to be switched off when the outdoor unit booted.
How it looks on the display
Model families & display variants
| Model family | Shows | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Wall-mounted single-zone units (Wind-Free, AR series) | E201 | Usually a wiring issue on a new install; lamps may flash on models without a numeric display. |
| Multi-zone FJM systems | E201 on one or more heads | Often crossed room connections or an indoor unit count that doesn't match. |
| Ducted and cassette units with wired controller | E201 | Check the indoor unit's own breaker and address settings first. |
Safety first · Consult a professional
Checking breakers and the outdoor disconnect is fine for owners. The terminal blocks in both units carry 208–230 V next to the low-voltage F1/F2 pair, and the outdoor inverter stays charged for minutes after power-off – leave every cover closed.
- Unplug the appliance or switch off the breaker before opening any panel. Mains voltage can kill.
Symptoms
- E201 on the indoor display, wired controller or in the SmartThings app shortly after power-on
- System never starts after installation, a unit swap or a power outage
- On a multi-zone system, one or several heads show E201 while others run
- Indoor fan may run but the outdoor unit stays silent
- Code returns after every restart at roughly the same time after power-on
Possible causes
Ranked by how often each cause is behind this code (editorial estimate).
- Communication wires (F1/F2) not landed, swapped or mixed up with power wires at a new or reworked install
- Multi-zone: cable and refrigerant lines of different rooms crossed, or connected indoor unit count doesn't match the outdoor setting
- Indoor unit on a separate circuit was without power when the outdoor unit started tracking
- Addressing or option settings not completed on ducted or cassette units
- Communication cable spliced, damaged or of the wrong type
- Indoor or outdoor control board unable to communicate
- Electrical noise from cables run alongside the communication pair
Fix it step by step
Note when E201 shows up
Time it: E201 appearing a few minutes after power-on, before the system ever cooled, points to tracking. Write down whether it began after new equipment, electrical work in the house or a storm – installation history is the fastest clue for this code.
Make sure every unit has power
Some Samsung ducted and cassette units have their own breaker. Check that every breaker labeled for the system and the outdoor disconnect are on. An indoor unit with a dark display was simply not there to answer.
Tools: Flashlight
Restart the whole system together
Switch off every breaker for the system for 10 minutes, then restore power to all units at once. Wait at least 10 minutes before pressing anything – multi-zone outdoor units can need several minutes to finish tracking, and interrupting it restarts the search.
Map which heads fail
On a multi-zone system, list which rooms show E201. If one head fails while its neighbor works, that head's cable or address is suspect. If the error moved to another room after a service visit, cables and refrigerant lines may be crossed between rooms.
Ask for an installation check
The installer should confirm each conductor lands on the same terminal at both ends, that F1/F2 are separate from power wiring, and run the outdoor unit's addressing or pipe-detection routine where the model has one. This is setup work, not a part failure, in most E201 cases.
How to reset E201
- Turn all indoor units off with the remote or controller
- Switch off every breaker for the system for 10 minutes
- Power all units at the same time and wait 10 minutes for tracking before starting

Repair options & costs
| Repair | DIY? | Estimated cost |
|---|---|---|
| Switch on indoor breaker and restart | Yes | $0 |
| Installer callback to correct wiring or addressing | No | $100–$250 |
| Re-pair crossed room connections on a multi-zone | No | $150–$400 |
| Replace communication cable | No | $200–$500 |
| Indoor or outdoor control board replacement | No | $300–$900 |

When to call a technician
If E201 persists after a full, simultaneous power restart with every unit powered, call the installer. On a new installation, the fix is usually part of their workmanship obligation – ask them before paying anyone else, and mention whether the fault is on one or all heads.
Frequently asked questions
How is E201 different from E101?
E201 means the units never managed to register each other after power-up, which usually points to installation or setup. E101 means communication that was working got lost later. The first calls for a wiring and setup check, the second for looking at damaged cable or failing boards.
Why did E201 appear after a power outage when everything worked before?
If indoor and outdoor units are on different circuits, the power may have come back at different times, or one breaker tripped. The outdoor unit then tracked without the indoor unit and gave up. A simultaneous restart usually clears it.
Can I swap a head between rooms on my multi-zone myself?
No. Each refrigerant line pair and communication cable belong together, and the outdoor unit needs to be re-addressed. Swapping them is certified refrigerant and electrical work.
