Panasonic's own support pages and service manuals define H11 as indoor/outdoor abnormal communication. The two units are linked through terminals 1, 2 and 3 on the connecting cable, with terminal 3 carrying the serial signal. When the indoor board keeps sending but gets no valid answer from the outdoor board, it stops operation and stores H11. Because Panasonic indoor units don't show codes on their own front panel, owners usually only see the power lamp blinking and have to read the code with the remote's CHECK button. The outdoor board not being powered or not booting – a tripped circuit, a blown board fuse, surge damage, ants or moisture in the outdoor electrical box – leads the causes, followed by the connecting cable and its terminals.

Safety first · Consult a professional

Stick to breakers and the outdoor disconnect. Terminals 1-2-3 carry 208–230 V between them and the inverter board keeps its charge for several minutes after power-off, so leave the terminal covers on. Refrigerant work is for EPA 608-certified technicians only.

  • Unplug the appliance or switch off the breaker before opening any panel. Mains voltage can kill.

Symptoms

  • Power indicator on the indoor unit blinking while the unit won't cool or heat
  • H11 shown on the remote after using the CHECK function
  • Outdoor unit completely silent, no fan and no compressor
  • Error appeared after a storm, power cut or outdoor work such as landscaping
  • Panasonic Comfort Cloud app reports the unit in error

Possible causes

Ranked by how often each cause is behind this code (editorial estimate).

  1. Outdoor board without power or not booting – blown fuse, surge or lightning damage 30%
  2. Loose, corroded or wrongly connected wire at terminals 1-2-3 25%
  3. Connecting cable damaged along its route – rodents, trimmers, crushed conduit 15%
  4. Ants, insects or moisture inside the outdoor electrical box 10%
  5. Indoor control board fault 10%
  6. Breaker or disconnect switched off, or brownout during start-up 10%

Fix it step by step

Diagnostic flow: H111Read the code with the remote2Check the outdoor power3Power down for 10 minutes4Inspect what you can see outside5Leave terminal tests to a technician
  1. Read the code with the remote

Point the remote at the unit and hold the CHECK button (use a pen tip) for about 5 seconds until the display shows '--'. Then step through codes with the timer or temperature arrows; when the indoor unit answers with a long beep of several seconds, the code on the remote is the stored fault. Press CHECK again to exit.

  2. Check the outdoor power

Check the breaker for the system and the disconnect next to the outdoor unit. Then call for cooling and listen outside – if nothing happens at all, the outdoor board may be unpowered or dead.

    Tools: Flashlight

  3. Power down for 10 minutes

Turn off the breaker long enough for both boards to shut down completely, then restore power and restart. A single H11 caused by a brief power dip usually clears this way.

  4. Inspect what you can see outside

Walk the cable route: look for chewed insulation, a trimmer nick near the ground, crushed conduit and an ant trail leading into the outdoor unit. Don't open the service cover – note what you found for the technician.

    Tools: Flashlight

  5. Leave terminal tests to a technician

The technician checks supply voltage between terminals 1 and 2 at the outdoor unit, looks for a fluctuating signal on terminal 3, inspects the board fuse and cleans out insects or corrosion. A good cable with no outdoor response means a board replacement.

    Tools: Multimeter

How to reset H11

  1. Switch the unit off with the remote
  2. Turn off the breaker for 10 minutes
  3. Restore power, wait a few minutes and restart in cooling or heating

Repair options & costs

RepairDIY?Estimated cost
Reset breaker or disconnect Yes $0
Technician diagnostic visit No $100–$200
Clean insects / corrosion, replace board fuse No $150–$300
Replace connecting cable No $200–$500
Outdoor or indoor control board replacement No $350–$950

When to call a technician

Call an HVAC technician if H11 returns after a full 10-minute power-down with the breaker and disconnect confirmed on. The next checks involve live voltage at terminals 1-2-3 and the outdoor board, which is technician work.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Panasonic only blink and not show H11?

Most Panasonic wall units have no code display. The blinking lamp tells you there's a fault; the CHECK button on the remote reveals which one.

Can ants really cause H11?

Yes. Ants are attracted to the warm outdoor electrical box, and their bodies can short or corrode contacts on the board. A technician can clean it out; bait around the unit helps keep them away.

Is H11 related to the dirty filter reminder?

No. A filter reminder is a separate indication. H11 is a genuine communication fault that stops operation until the link is restored.
