At the start of a cycle a Samsung dishwasher drains briefly and then opens its inlet valve. If the level sensor doesn't see the expected amount of water within the allowed time, it stops and shows 4C, or 4E on some displays. Samsung specifies a supply pressure of 20 to 120 psi and hot water between 120 and 149°F, and anything that pinches the flow below that, from a half-closed valve to a clogged inlet screen, can set the code. On new installs the shutoff valve and a kinked supply line are by far the most common reasons.

Safety first · Consult a professional

Turn off the breaker and close the supply valve before loosening any fitting. The supply line is under full house pressure, so have a towel and a shallow pan ready.

  • Unplug the appliance or switch off the breaker before opening any panel. Mains voltage can kill.
  • Water and electricity: unplug first, keep towels ready and never stand in water while the appliance is connected.

Symptoms

  • 4C or 4E on the display soon after starting
  • Brief drain sound, then silence instead of the hiss of water entering
  • Tub floor still dry or only damp when you open the door
  • Code appears after plumbing work or a water outage
  • Weak flow from the kitchen hot tap as well

Possible causes

Ranked by how often each cause is behind this code (editorial estimate).

  1. Shutoff valve under the sink closed or only partly open 35%
  2. Supply line kinked or crushed behind or under the unit 20%
  3. Inlet valve screen clogged with sediment, often after plumbing work 18%
  4. House water pressure below about 20 psi 10%
  5. Inlet valve coil or wiring failed 10%
  6. Frozen supply line in an unheated space 7%

Fix it step by step

Diagnostic flow: 4C1Confirm the valve and faucet2Inspect the supply line route3Flow-test the line4Clean the inlet screen5Check the drain hose height6Test the inlet valve coil
  1. Confirm the valve and faucet

Open the dishwasher shutoff fully and check that the kitchen hot tap delivers a strong, steady stream. If the whole house has low pressure, a plumber has to fix that first.

    Tools: Flashlight

  2. Inspect the supply line route

Remove the toe kick and look along the line to the inlet valve at the front left or right corner. It must not be pinched by a leveling foot or folded where it turns.

    Tools: Screwdriver, Flashlight

  3. Flow-test the line

With the breaker off and the valve closed, disconnect the line at the dishwasher inlet, hold it in a bucket and open the valve briefly. You should get a strong, steady stream; a trickle points to the valve or line.

Tools: Towels & shallow pan, Pliers

  4. Clean the inlet screen

Look into the inlet valve fitting: a small mesh screen sits inside. Pick out sand or scale with needle-nose pliers without puncturing the mesh, then reconnect the line hand-tight plus a quarter turn.

    Tools: Pliers, Flashlight

  5. Check the drain hose height

The drain hose must loop up high under the counter or run to an air gap. If it lies low on the cabinet floor, fresh water can siphon out as fast as it comes in.

    Tools: Flashlight

  6. Test the inlet valve coil

If flow is good and the screen is clean, measure the valve coil with the connector off. An open reading means the valve must be replaced; this job is fine for a handy owner but many prefer a technician.

    Tools: Multimeter, Screwdriver

How to reset 4C

  1. Press and hold Start (or Start/Reset) for about 3 seconds to cancel.
  2. Turn off the breaker or unplug for about a minute.
  3. Restore power, start Rinse and check that water enters within the first minute.

Repair options & costs

RepairDIY?Estimated cost
Open valve, straighten supply line Yes $0
New stainless braided supply line with elbow Yes $15–$35
Clean inlet screen Yes $0
Inlet valve replacement by a technician No $150–$280
Plumber to fix low house pressure or a bad shutoff No $150–$350

When to call a technician

Call a technician when the supply line delivers a strong flow, the inlet screen is clean and 4C still returns; the inlet valve or the level sensor then needs electrical testing. A shutoff valve that won't open fully or house pressure below 20 psi is a plumber's job.

Frequently asked questions

Is 4C the same as 4E on a Samsung dishwasher?

Yes. Samsung lists both as the water supply code; which one you see depends on the display. The checks are identical.

My Samsung dishwasher is brand new and shows 4C. Why?

Most often the shutoff valve was never fully opened or the supply line got kinked when the unit was pushed into place. Check both before calling for warranty service.

Should a Samsung dishwasher be connected to hot or cold water?

In the US, Samsung wants a hot supply between 120 and 149°F. Hotter than that is a scald risk, and a cold connection makes cycles longer, though it doesn't cause 4C.

Can low water pressure alone cause 4C?

Yes. Below about 20 psi the tub doesn't fill in time, and the inlet valve may not close reliably either. If every faucet in the house is weak, fix the pressure first.
