LG shows IE when the tub doesn't reach its programmed level within about 10 minutes of filling. The obvious reasons are water not arriving: a closed shutoff, a kinked line, a clogged inlet screen or pressure below LG's 20 psi minimum. The less obvious one is water arriving and leaving again. If the end of the drain hose sits lower than LG specifies, water siphons down the drain as fast as it comes in, and the dishwasher never sees a full tub. That's why a new install with a perfect water supply can still throw IE.

  1. Two-minute check

    Start a cycle, wait two minutes, then open the door. No water on the tub floor means the supply side; water that was there and is draining away means the drain hose is siphoning.

  2. Fix a siphoning drain hose

    Fasten the drain hose as high as possible under the counter before it drops to the sink drain or disposal, or route it through an air gap. A hose lying on the cabinet floor is the classic cause.

  3. Flow-test the supply

    With the breaker off and the valve closed, disconnect the supply line at the dishwasher, hold it in a bucket and open the valve briefly. The flow should be strong and steady.

  4. Clean the inlet screen

    Look into the inlet valve fitting for the small mesh screen and pick out sand or scale carefully. Reconnect the line hand-tight plus a quarter turn and check for drips.

  5. Check house pressure

    If every faucet is weak, measure at an outdoor spigot with a pressure gauge or ask a plumber. LG requires 20 to 120 psi at the dishwasher.

  6. Test the inlet valve

    If water supply and drain routing are fine, measure the inlet valve coil with its connector off. An open coil means a new valve.

  1. Press Power to turn the dishwasher off.
  2. Switch off the breaker for about a minute.
  3. Restore power, start a cycle and check for water on the tub floor after two minutes.

When to call a technician

Check the drain hose. If it lies low without a high loop or air gap, water siphons out while the dishwasher fills and the level is never reached.

Is IE the same as 1E?

Yes. LG's display draws the letter I like a 1, so both spellings describe the same inlet error.

How long does an LG dishwasher try to fill before IE?

About 10 minutes. That's why the code doesn't appear right away and why a slow trickle can pass on one cycle and fail on another.

Can a frozen line cause IE?

Yes, in cabins, garages or exterior-wall kitchens. Let the line thaw naturally or warm the cabinet with a space heater; never use an open flame on the hose.
