On LG dishwashers the wash pump feeds the spray arms through a diverter on top of the sump. A small motor that LG calls the Vario motor turns a disc there, so water goes to the lower arm, the upper arms or both, and a switch reports each position back to the control. nE (displayed with a small n) means the control told the diverter to move and never saw the confirmation. On some models the cycle keeps running and the only sign is one rack coming out dirty; on others it stops. LG's own first steps are to rearrange the dishes so nothing blocks the arms and restart; a code that returns points to the motor, its switch or the wiring.

  1. Rearrange and restart

    Make sure no tall plate, baking sheet or lid blocks the lower spray arm or the upper arm's feed tube at the back of the rack. Spin each arm by hand, then cancel, turn off the breaker for a few minutes and restart.

  2. Clear the sump under the filter

    Remove the multi filter and the flat mesh filter and check the area around the sump for bones, glass or plastic pieces that could reach the diverter. Clean the filters while they're out.

  3. Watch the spray arms

    Run a short cycle and briefly open the door at different stages. Normally the lower and upper arms take turns; if the same arm always runs, the diverter isn't moving.

    With the breaker off, remove the lower access panel and find the Vario motor at the bottom of the sump. Check that its plug is fully seated and free of corrosion or water residue.

    Unplug the motor and measure across its coil terminals: an open reading means a dead motor. Measure the position switch while turning the shaft slowly by hand; it should switch between open and closed.

When to call a technician

Can a badly loaded dish really cause nE?
