Samsung WaterWall dishwashers don't have a lower spray arm. Fixed jets at the back of the tub shoot water at a flat reflector, the vane, which a motor drags back and forth along a rail on the tub floor. When the control commands the vane to move and it doesn't reach its end position, the cycle stops with 7C, shown as 7E on many models. Samsung notes that a service call is rarely needed: a utensil hanging through the lower rack, transport tape on a new unit or a vane knocked off its shuttle explains nearly every case.

Safety first · Consult a professional

Switch the dishwasher off before reaching under the lower rack. Knives and forks that fell through are the usual blockers, so move slowly and wear gloves.

  • Unplug the appliance or switch off the breaker before opening any panel. Mains voltage can kill.

Symptoms

  • 7C or 7E on the display and the cycle stops
  • Vane sits at one end of the rail or partway along it
  • Clicking or grinding from under the lower rack
  • Dishes clean in one zone of the lower rack but dirty in another
  • Code appears on the first run of a newly installed unit

Possible causes

Ranked by how often each cause is behind this code (editorial estimate).

  1. Utensil or pot handle hanging below the lower rack into the vane's path 35%
  2. Shipping tape left on the guide rail of a new dishwasher 20%
  3. Vane installed backward or knocked off the gray shuttle 20%
  4. Small item or debris jammed in the rail or shuttle track 13%
  5. Drive motor, belt or position sensor faulty 12%

Fix it step by step

Diagnostic flow: 7C1Clear the rail completely2Check how you load3Move the vane by hand4Reinstall with the logo up5Watch a test cycle
  1. Clear the rail completely

With the power off and the lower rack out, run a gloved finger along the rail to find small items like bottle caps, toothpicks or glass chips wedged in the track.

    Tools: Flashlight, Gloves

  2. Check how you load

Tall platters, cutting boards or long utensils should not hang below the rack at the back, where the vane passes. Load them so nothing sits lower than the rack wires.

  3. Move the vane by hand

Lift the vane off, then push the gray shuttle gently along the rail. It should slide with light, even resistance; a spot where it catches points to debris or a damaged belt.

    Tools: Gloves

  4. Reinstall with the logo up

Put the vane back on the shuttle with the WaterWall logo facing forward and upward, and check it snaps in firmly.

  5. Watch a test cycle

Power cycle for two minutes, start a short cycle and open the door after a minute. The vane should have moved; if it still sits in the same place and 7C returns, the drive is at fault.

How to reset 7C

  1. Press and hold Start (or Start/Reset) for about 3 seconds to cancel.
  2. Turn off the breaker for two minutes.
  3. Restore power and start a cycle; the code clears once the vane can travel freely.

Repair options & costs

RepairDIY?Estimated cost
Clear blockage, remove tape, reseat vane Yes $0
Replacement vane or shuttle Yes $20–$50
WaterWall drive motor or belt by a technician No $200–$380
Technician diagnostic visit No $110–$200

Rough US estimates; technician call-out fees vary by region. Not a quote.

When to call a technician

Call Samsung service or a technician if the rail is clear, the vane is seated correctly, the shuttle slides freely by hand and 7C still comes back. Then the drive motor, belt or position sensing under the tub needs checking.

Frequently asked questions

Is 7C the same as 7E on a Samsung dishwasher?

Yes, both point to the WaterWall reflector not moving. Samsung's support material mostly uses 7E, but some models display 7C.

Can I run the dishwasher without the vane?

No. Without the vane the water from the back jets doesn't reach the lower rack properly and the control expects to see it move. Reinstall it before running a cycle.

Why did 7C appear right after installation?

New units ship with tape on the guide rail to keep the vane from moving in transit. If it isn't removed, the vane can't travel on the first cycle.

Which way does the WaterWall vane go on?

With the WaterWall logo facing forward toward the door and upward. Installed backward, it can bind on the shuttle and trigger the code.
