Frigidaire's service data sheets list SY EF as an evaporator fan circuit fault. The evaporator fan sits behind the freezer's rear panel, right in front of the cooling coil, and blows the cold air into the freezer and through the air duct to the fresh-food side. It's a small low-voltage DC motor with a feedback wire, so the main control knows whether it's actually turning. When the board powers the fan and the feedback stays silent, it shows SY EF. The compressor keeps running, but without airflow the coil ices over, and both compartments slowly warm up – the fridge side first.

Unplug the refrigerator before removing the freezer's rear panel; the defrost heater behind it runs on line voltage. Never chip ice off the coil with a sharp tool – a punctured evaporator releases refrigerant and can only be repaired by an EPA 608 certified technician.

Fix it step by step
Protect the food first
Put an appliance thermometer in each section. If the fresh-food side climbs above 40°F, move milk, meat and leftovers to a cooler with ice while you work on the fan.
Check for airflow
Open the freezer, hold the door switch in and listen at the rear grille. A healthy fan starts within a minute and you can feel a steady draft at the vents; silence or a ticking noise points to a stuck or dead fan.

Look for frost behind the panel
Unplug the unit, empty the freezer and remove the baskets or shelves and the rear panel (a few screws). A coil buried in white frost means the fan is probably fine but iced in – the real fault is the defrost system.

Manual defrost
Leave the unit unplugged with the doors open for 12–24 hours, or melt the ice with a hair dryer on low held well away from plastic parts. Soak up the meltwater with towels. On some Gallery bottom-freezer models the service sheet also describes a forced defrost by holding the fresh-food + and – keys for 5 seconds.

Spin and inspect the fan
With the ice gone, turn the blade by hand. It should coast freely without grinding; a gritty or seized motor needs replacing. Check that the plug on the fan motor is dry, fully latched and free of green corrosion.

Run the fan test
On models with a service diagnostic mode (for example holding the freezer + and – keys for 5 seconds on some bottom-freezer units), step to the evaporator fan test. If the fan doesn't run when commanded, the motor, harness or board output is at fault.

When to call a technician
Call a technician if the fan motor tests bad and you don't want to replace it, or if SY EF comes back after a manual defrost – that means the defrost heater, its sensor or the control isn't doing its job. If the fan runs and the coil is only partly frosted while both sections stay warm, the sealed system is suspect and needs an EPA 608 certified tech.

Is my food safe with an SY EF code?
Keep the fresh-food section at 40°F or below. Perishables that sat above 40°F for more than 2 hours should be thrown out; frozen food that still has ice crystals can be refrozen.
Why does the fridge side warm up before the freezer?
All the cold air is made in the freezer. The fridge side only gets cold air that the evaporator fan pushes through the duct, so it loses temperature first when the fan stops.
Will a manual defrost fix SY EF for good?
Only if the ice formed because of a one-off event like a door left ajar. If the coil ices up again within days, the defrost heater, its sensor or the control needs repair, or the fan will freeze in again.
Is 5Y EF a different code?
No. The display draws an S that looks like a 5, so 5Y EF and SY EF are the same evaporator fan fault.
