Samsung's control board expects a rotation signal from the freezer evaporator fan whenever it switches the fan on. If that feedback is missing, it logs 21E (21C on newer boards). Samsung itself names three triggers: a fan frozen in ice, a door or drawer left open, and a gap in the gasket. On French-door and four-door models the freezer drain is a frequent hidden culprit: meltwater refreezes in the trough, the ice creeps up the coil and finally reaches the fan. Because the in-door ice maker on many of these models is fed with freezer air, ice production usually slows down too.

Unplug the refrigerator before taking off the freezer's rear cover; the fan, defrost heater and wiring behind it carry line voltage. Use only warm air or warm water to melt ice – a knife or screwdriver can puncture the evaporator tubing and release refrigerant.

Fix it step by step
Take the freezer temperature
Put an appliance thermometer between frozen packages for an hour. Close to 0°F means the fault is intermittent; 15°F or warmer means the fan has been stuck for a while and you should move food to coolers or a second freezer before you start.
Check how the drawer closes
Slide the freezer drawer shut gently and watch whether it pulls itself in the last inch. Remove an overfilled upper basket or a crooked ice bucket and look for a gasket that is folded over at the corners – one small gap is enough to frost the coil.

Remove the rear cover and read the ice
Unplug the fridge, lift out the baskets and unscrew the freezer's back cover. Solid ice sitting in the bottom trough and climbing the lower rows of the coil points to a blocked drain; even frost over the entire coil points to a defrost failure in the heater, its fuse or the defrost sensor.

Melt the ice without tools
Aim a hair dryer on low at the coil from a hand's width away, or set pans of hot water on the freezer floor and close the drawer for 20 minutes at a time. Keep towels under the drawer and never lever ice off the tubing.

Once the trough is clear, squeeze warm water from a turkey baster into the drain hole until it runs freely into the pan under the fridge. If this drain keeps freezing on your model, a technician can fit a drain heater or heat-conducting clip.

With the ice gone, the blade should turn by hand with no drag. Reconnect power with the cover off, press the freezer door switch and check whether the fan starts; if it doesn't, measuring for DC voltage at its connector shows whether the motor or the board is at fault.

When to call a technician
Book a technician if 21E returns within a week of a full thaw, if the drain refreezes over and over, or if the fan has voltage but won't run. Also call if the freezer won't go below about 10°F even with the fan turning: that can mean a refrigerant problem, and only an EPA 608 certified technician may open the sealed system.

How long will my frozen food last with 21E?
A full freezer that stays shut holds safe temperatures for roughly 48 hours, a half-full one about 24. Food that still has ice crystals or is at 40°F or below can be refrozen; anything that has sat above 40°F for more than two hours should be thrown out.
Why does 21E keep coming back every few weeks?
That rhythm usually means a slow ice buildup: a freezer drain that refreezes or a drawer that doesn't quite seal. Thawing fixes the symptom; the drain or the seal has to be fixed to stop the cycle.
Does 21E also affect the fridge section?
On most Samsung models with separate fridge and freezer cooling, the fridge stays cold. What suffers besides the freezer is the ice maker, which relies on freezer air.
Can I just replace the fan without thawing?
No. A new fan jammed in the same ice will fail the same way, and the coil still needs to be clear for air to pass. Thaw first, then decide whether the old motor is actually bad.
