Samsung Refrigerator Error 39E – Causes & Fix

Samsung's twist-tray ice maker has its own small motor, a position sensor and a thermistor that tells it when the cubes are frozen hard enough to release. The board expects the tray to rotate, drop the ice and return to level within a set time. If the tray stalls, never reports home position, or the ice maker's sensor reads out of range, the board shows 39E (39C on newer models) and stops making ice. Most of the time the tray is physically blocked – by ice that overflowed and froze around it, or by cubes jammed against a full bucket. A worn-out ice maker unit is the next most likely reason. Cooling in the fridge and freezer is unaffected.

Fix it step by step
Empty the bucket and clear jams
Remove the ice bucket, dump it and look at the space between the tray and the bucket. Break up any cubes wedged in the chute or in front of the tray by hand, and check the auger area of the bucket for a frozen clump.

Look at the tray position
A healthy tray sits level. If it is stuck halfway through a twist, or ice has frozen over its rim and down the ice maker body, that ice is what blocked the harvest. Melt it with a hair dryer on low – never pry the tray with a tool.

Run the self test
With the bucket out and the ice maker switched on, hold its test button until it chimes. The tray should twist fully, return and then take on water within a minute or two. Twisting only partway, grinding or doing nothing at all points to the ice maker unit itself.
Check for overfilling
After the test fill, the water should stop just below the tray's dividers. Water that spills over or keeps trickling after the fill ends means the inlet valve isn't closing crisply – that ice will jam the tray again.

Seat the bucket and the plug
Refit the bucket until it clicks and sits flush; a crooked bucket can confuse the full-ice detection. With the fridge unplugged, remove the ice maker's screws, pull it forward and make sure its connector is fully latched and dry.

Replace the ice maker if the test fails
On most Samsung models the ice maker is a plug-in module held by a few screws. If a clear, dry tray still won't complete the test, fitting a new assembly is usually faster and cheaper than chasing the individual motor or sensor.

When to call a technician

Does 39E mean my fridge is failing?
No. It only concerns the ice maker. The fridge and freezer keep cooling normally, and you can switch the ice maker off until the repair.
Why does 39E come back after I clear the ice?
If the tray is free and the code still returns, the ice maker's motor or position sensor is worn. Recurring overflow ice is the other possibility – check whether the water fill stops cleanly.
Can I replace the Samsung ice maker myself?

What's the difference between 39E and 33E?
