Samsung's main board watches the speed signal coming back from the fridge (fresh-food) evaporator fan. When the fan is switched on but reports no rotation, the board stores 22E – shown as 22C on some models. On Twin Cooling French-door and side-by-side models the usual reason is ice that has grown over the fridge evaporator and locked the fan blade, which in turn points to a defrost or drain problem. Less often the fan motor or its connector has simply failed. The freezer normally keeps working while the fresh-food section slowly warms up.

  1. Confirm the fan has stopped

    The fridge fan pauses whenever a door is open. Hold the door switch(es) in by hand for a minute and listen at the rear vents. A steady whoosh means the fan runs; silence or a ticking blade hitting ice confirms the fault.

    Take out the lowest shelf or crisper and shine a flashlight through the back vents. White frost or a clear ice sheet around the fan housing means the blade is frozen and a defrost is the first fix.

    Many Samsung models have a forced-defrost test mode entered by holding two buttons (often Power Freeze and Fridge) for about 8–10 seconds until the display blanks; the exact sequence varies by model. If you're not sure, unplug the fridge and leave both doors open for up to 24 hours with towels on the floor. Move your food to coolers first.

When to call a technician

Call a technician if 22E comes back within a few days of a thorough defrost – that means the defrost system itself (heater, sensor or board) isn't clearing the coil and the ice will keep returning. Also book a visit if the fan spins freely and the code stays, or if the fridge section won't get below 41°F even with the fan running, which can point to a sealed-system problem only a certified tech may work on.

Frequently asked questions

Is my food safe while 22E is showing?

The freezer usually keeps working normally. Put a thermometer in the fridge section: perishable food that has sat above 40°F for more than about two hours should be thrown out.

Why does 22E come back after I defrost?

Defrosting only removes the symptom. If ice rebuilds within days, the automatic defrost (heater, sensor or fuse) or the drain isn't doing its job, and that part needs testing or replacement.

Is 22E the same as 21E?

No. 21E points to the freezer fan, 22E to the fan in the fresh-food section. The causes are similar, but the parts sit behind different panels.

Can I just leave the fridge running with the error?

You can for a short time if the fridge section still holds 40°F or below, but the ice usually keeps growing and cooling gets worse. Plan a defrost soon rather than waiting.
