F53 means the control electronics no longer receive a valid speed signal from the drive motor, so they switch the drive off to protect the machine. Miele USA classifies it as a technical fault that owners can't fix themselves. On the W1 washers sold in the US, the motor is an electronically controlled brushless type, so the cause is usually the speed or position sensor, a connector at the motor or the motor electronics – less often the motor itself. What you can do is rule out a drum that's physically jammed and try one power reset before booking service.

Fix it step by step
Power reset
Switch off, unplug the washer and wait a few minutes. Plug back in and restart; a connector with a marginal contact can occasionally recover and let the cycle finish.
Empty the drum
If water is in the drum, drain it through the drain filter behind the bottom flap into a shallow tray, then remove the laundry.

With the washer unplugged and the door open, turn the drum slowly both ways. It should rotate smoothly with light, even resistance from the belt and motor. Grinding, catching or a scraping sound suggests something trapped between drum and tub.

Run Rinse/Spin with only a few items. If F53 appears even with an almost empty drum, the load wasn't the trigger and the fault lies in the sensor, wiring or electronics.

Can I keep using my Miele after F53 clears?
