Lennox variable-capacity heat pumps and air conditioners have two brains outside: the outdoor control, which talks to your communicating thermostat, and a separate inverter drive that actually spins the compressor. Alert 434 means the outdoor control lost contact with that inverter and couldn't get it back during a single thermostat call within one hour. The control then drops every compressor demand, and the indoor blower stops as well – even test mode won't run it – until the system is reset. The single most common trigger is a power mismatch: the outdoor unit's high voltage is off (tripped breaker, pulled disconnect, service work) while the 24 V control power from the indoor side stays on, or the other way round. Loose connections and a failed inverter board make up most of the remaining cases.

The outdoor unit is fed with 208/230 V, and the inverter's capacitors stay charged for several minutes after power is removed. Limit yourself to the breakers, the outdoor disconnect and the thermostat screens; leave every panel on the outdoor unit closed.

Fix it step by step
Read the alert details
On the thermostat, open the dealer control center and then Notifications. Note the code, the priority (Service Soon or Service Urgent) and how often it has been logged – a dealer will ask for exactly that.
Check both power sources
Look in the main panel for a tripped double-pole breaker feeding the outdoor unit and check that the disconnect box next to it is fully on and its pull-out block is seated. Also make sure the indoor furnace or air handler has power, because it supplies the 24 V to the outdoor control.

Reset in the right order
Lennox specifies outdoor first: switch the outdoor unit's breaker or disconnect off, wait a minute, turn it back on. Then cycle the indoor unit's power (furnace switch or air-handler breaker) so the 24 V to the outdoor control is also refreshed.
Give the recovery routine time
After a reset the outdoor control opens the contactor for two minutes, then spends up to three minutes trying to reach the inverter, and repeats this up to three times. Let it run for about 15 minutes before judging whether the alert is gone.
Look, don't touch, outside
Without opening panels, check the conduit and whip between the disconnect and the unit for damage, burn marks or chewed insulation, and see whether water has been getting into the disconnect box. Report anything you find to the dealer.

Write down whether 434 follows thunderstorms, utility flickers or someone working on the unit. A pattern tied to power events points to the supply; an alert that returns on calm days points to a connection or the inverter itself.

When to call a technician
Call a Lennox dealer or HVAC technician if 434 returns after the outdoor-then-indoor reset, if it has escalated to Service Urgent, or if a breaker trips again. Before the visit, look up whether the equipment was registered – Lennox parts warranties often cover the inverter, which is by far the most expensive part involved.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my whole system stop, even the fan inside?
With alert 434 the outdoor control cancels compressor demand and the indoor blower is held off until a reset, so no air moves at all. It is a protective behavior, not a second failure.
The alert showed up right after my maintenance visit – is that normal?
It can be. If the technician switched off the outdoor disconnect while the indoor unit stayed powered, the control logs 434. One reset in the correct order normally clears it for good.
What is the difference between Service Soon and Service Urgent here?
Service Soon means the control is still trying to recover. Service Urgent means it retried three times without reaching the inverter and has locked out until someone resets it.
Is a failed inverter covered by warranty?
Often the part is, if the unit was registered within Lennox's required window; labor usually depends on your installer's terms. Ask the dealer to check the serial number before quoting the repair.
