GE groups F0, F1, F6 and F7 as key panel faults, and F7 is the one most owners see: the electronic control reads a key on the touch panel as pressed for far longer than any person would hold it. To avoid starting a bake or self-clean on its own, the control stops accepting commands and beeps. On freestanding GE ranges the panel sits on the backguard right above the cooktop, so steam and grease from boiling pots are the classic trigger; on wall ovens it's more often a worn membrane or a tail connector that has corroded. The cure is usually a new key panel, but a panel that is only wet can recover once it dries out.

Turn off the range or wall-oven breaker before you remove the backguard or control panel – the control board has line-voltage terminals right next to the keypad connector. On a gas range, leave the gas supply alone; nothing about F7 involves gas parts.

Fix it step by step
Look for an obvious pressed key
Check that nothing is leaning on the panel and that no key looks bulged, cracked or sunken. Wipe the panel with a dry cloth only – liquid cleaner sprayed straight on the glass is a common trigger for F7 on GE touch panels.
Power down and let it dry
Switch off the breaker and leave the range unpowered for several hours, ideally overnight, if cooking steam could be the cause. Restore power; if F7 stays away, keep lids on boiling pots and use the vent hood so the backguard doesn't get soaked again.
Check the keypad tail
With the breaker off, remove the screws at the back or top of the control console and tip it forward. Find the flat ribbon from the keypad and look at where it enters the connector: green corrosion, a crease or a cracked trace here causes phantom key presses.

Isolate keypad from control
Unplug the keypad ribbon from the control board and restore power briefly. If F7 no longer appears (the keys obviously won't work), the keypad is the fault; if F7 comes back with the keypad unplugged, the control board is misreading its own input.

Measure a suspect key
On membrane-style panels you can check key pairs on the ribbon with a meter: an unpressed key should read open, and a pressed key should drop to low resistance. A key that reads closed while untouched confirms a shorted membrane.

Order by the full model number on the tag inside the drawer or door frame. On many GE models the glass, keypad and control are sold as one assembly; on others the membrane is separate and peels off the metal panel.

When to call a technician
Book a technician if F7 persists with the keypad unplugged, if the oven starts heating on its own, or if your model uses a combined glass/control assembly that you're not comfortable wiring back up. A wall oven that has to be slid out of the cabinet is also a two-person job best left to a pro.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep cooking while F7 is showing?
Usually not – the control ignores the keys to prevent an accidental start. On many gas ranges the surface burners still light because they use mechanical valves, but the oven stays locked out until the key fault is gone.
Why does F7 keep coming back after I reset the breaker?
A reset only restarts the control; the moment it scans the keypad again it finds the same closed key. If the panel was only damp, a longer power-off to let it dry can help, otherwise the keypad needs replacing.
My oven turned itself on – is that related to F7?
Yes, a shorted key can act like a button press and start a function. Keep the breaker off when you're not supervising the range until the keypad or control is replaced.
Is F7 the same as the LOC or Lock Controls message?
No. LOC means the control lockout feature is switched on, which you turn off by holding the lock key. F7 is a fault the control detects in the keypad circuit.
