Nissan C1130 Code: Engine Signal 1 (ABS/VDC)

The ABS/VDC unit isn't getting a valid engine signal from the ECM, so it switches stability control off.

C1130 is stored by the ABS actuator and electric unit, not by the engine computer. VDC and traction control need live engine data from the ECM over CAN, such as engine speed, torque and throttle position, so they can request torque reductions when a wheel spins. When that data is missing or flagged invalid, the ABS unit logs C1130 and shuts VDC and TCS down, turning on the SLIP and VDC OFF lights and sometimes the ABS light. Nissan's guidance is clear: C1130 is almost always an effect, and the engine P-codes behind it must be repaired and erased first. It is used on a wide range of Nissans including the Altima, Sentra, Versa, Rogue, Murano, Pathfinder, Frontier, Juke and 370Z.

Can I keep driving? The brakes themselves still work, and normal ABS usually does too, but stability and traction control are off. Drive gently, especially on wet or icy roads, and fix the engine fault behind it soon.

Symptoms

  • SLIP light and VDC OFF light on together
  • ABS warning light on in some cases
  • Check engine light on with one or more engine codes
  • Rough running, stalling or reduced power from the underlying engine fault
  • Intelligent cruise or emergency braking features unavailable on equipped models

Possible causes

Ranked by how often each cause is behind this code (editorial estimate).

  1. An active engine fault (crank or cam sensor, misfire, MAF) invalidating the ECM data 38%
  2. Electronic throttle fault or throttle not relearned after cleaning or battery disconnect 20%
  3. Low battery voltage or voltage dips during cranking corrupting module data 16%
  4. CAN communication problem between ECM and ABS unit 12%
  5. Old C1130 left in ABS memory after the engine fault was already fixed 9%
  6. ABS actuator and electric unit internal fault 5%

Diagnosis step by step

Diagnostic flow: C11301Scan every module, not just theengine2Fix the engine codes first3Check the battery and chargingvoltage4Relearn the electronic throttle ifneeded5Clear ABS codes and drive
  1. Scan every module, not just the engine

A basic code reader only sees the ECM, so use a scan tool that reads the ABS module too. Write down every engine code, communication code and ABS code before clearing anything.

    Tools: OBD-II scanner

  2. Fix the engine codes first

Diagnose and repair any stored P-codes, then erase them from the ECM. Crank and cam sensor codes, throttle actuator codes and misfires are the ones most often behind C1130.

    Tools: OBD-II scanner, Multimeter

  3. Check the battery and charging voltage

Resting voltage should be around 12.6 V and running voltage about 13.8–14.6 V. A weak battery that drops well below 10 V while cranking can leave stale C-codes in several modules at once.

    Tools: Multimeter

  4. Relearn the electronic throttle if needed

After throttle body cleaning, battery disconnect or ECM work, Nissans need the accelerator and throttle closed-position learn and the idle air volume learn. An unlearned throttle can set idle and throttle codes that knock out VDC.

    Tools: OBD-II scanner

  5. Clear ABS codes and drive

Erase C1130 from the ABS module separately, then drive above about 20 mph. If it returns with no engine codes present, check CAN wiring and U-codes before suspecting the ABS unit.

    Tools: OBD-II scanner

Emissions / smog test impact

Depends

C1130 alone doesn't affect an emissions test, but the engine code that caused it usually lights the check engine light, which fails OBD emissions testing. States with safety inspections may also reject a lit ABS or stability warning.

Frequently asked questions

Why does an engine problem turn off my stability control?

VDC reduces engine torque when a wheel slips, and it needs trustworthy engine data to do that. When the ECM reports a fault, the ABS unit switches VDC off rather than acting on bad information.

I fixed the engine problem, but the SLIP and VDC OFF lights are still on. Why?

C1130 is stored in the ABS module, and clearing engine codes doesn't erase it. Clear the ABS memory separately with a capable scan tool and take a short drive.

Do I need a new ABS module?

Rarely. Nissan's own diagnosis starts with the engine codes, and most C1130 cases disappear once those are fixed. Only suspect the ABS unit if C1130 returns with no engine, voltage or communication faults.

Can a throttle body cleaning cause C1130?

Indirectly, yes. If the throttle and idle relearns aren't done afterward, the ECM can set idle or throttle codes, and those in turn make the ABS unit log C1130.
