Loss of power: Codes, Causes & Fixes

Noticeable loss of power usually has one of a few causes: the engine computer has entered limp mode, a turbocharged engine is underboosting (P0299), airflow is restricted by a dirty MAF sensor or clogged air filter, fuel pressure is low, or the exhaust is blocked by a failing catalytic converter or full diesel particulate filter. Read all stored codes and freeze-frame data first – they usually show which of these paths to follow.

P0AFA Powertrain Total high-voltage battery voltage dropped below the minimum the system allows, so power… High P1101 Chevrolet · Powertrain GM's engine computer found that measured airflow doesn't agree with what it expects. Low P1128 Volkswagen · Powertrain VW's part-load fuel adaptation has maxed out adding fuel on bank 1 – the engine runs lean as… Moderate P1131 Ford · Powertrain Ford's front O2 sensor on bank 1 stays lean even after the PCM has added all the fuel it… Low P1217 Nissan · Powertrain Nissan's ECM saw engine coolant get hotter than it should, usually because the radiator fan… Critical P1259 Honda · Powertrain The PCM saw the VTEC solenoid or VTEC oil pressure switch misbehave on an older Honda VTEC… Moderate P1272 Nissan · Powertrain The front air/fuel ratio sensor on bank 1 isn't sending a usable, moving signal to the Nissan… Moderate P1273 Nissan · Powertrain Nissan's ECM sees the front air/fuel ratio sensor on bank 1 reading lean for too long and flags… Low P1285 Ford · Powertrain Ford's cylinder head temperature sensor reports the engine is overheating. Pull over and shut… Critical P1295 Hyundai · Powertrain Hyundai's engine computer no longer trusts the electronic throttle and has cut power as… High P1297 Volkswagen · Powertrain Boost is escaping between turbo and throttle body – usually a split hose or a leaking diverter… Moderate P1299 Ford · Powertrain The engine got so hot that the Ford PCM is shutting off fuel to cylinders to save it. Stop… Critical P1300 Toyota · Powertrain Toyota's ECM fires ignition coil No. 1 but gets no confirmation pulse (IGF) back from its… Moderate P1305 Toyota · Powertrain The igniter in Toyota coil No. 2 stops confirming its sparks, often only once the engine is hot. Moderate P1310 Toyota · Powertrain No spark confirmation from one Toyota coil: No. 3 on four-cylinders, but a different coil… Moderate P1326 Hyundai · Powertrain Hyundai's KSDS software heard vibration typical of worn rod bearings and put the engine in limp… Critical P1326 Kia · Powertrain Kia's engine computer detected early rod-bearing wear through the knock sensor and capped… Critical P1340 Volkswagen · Powertrain The cam signal no longer lines up with the crank signal – often a jumped belt or stretched… High P1345 Chevrolet · Powertrain The cam signal is out of step with the crank signal; on Vortec engines usually a mis-set… Moderate P1346 Toyota · Powertrain Toyota's ECM sees the intake cam signal in the wrong place relative to the crankshaft signal. Moderate P1349 Toyota · Powertrain Toyota's VVT-i system isn't moving the intake camshaft to the position the ECM is asking for. Moderate P1354 Toyota · Powertrain On a Toyota V6 or V8, the bank 2 intake camshaft isn't reaching the timing the ECM commands. Moderate P1399 Honda · Powertrain An older Honda's PCM counted misfires that jump between cylinders instead of staying in one. Moderate P1516 Chevrolet · Powertrain The electronic throttle didn't move to where the computer commanded, so the engine drops into… Moderate P1518 Ford · Powertrain Ford's intake runner plates didn't close when commanded, so low-rpm torque suffers. Often… Low P1656 Toyota · Powertrain Toyota's ECM has found an open or short in the electrical circuit of the VVT-i oil control… Low P175D Volkswagen · Powertrain The DSG computer saw clutch 1 let go while it was supposed to stay engaged, so it cut… High P1778 Nissan · Powertrain The Jatco CVT's step motor is being commanded, but the pulley ratio isn't following it as it… High P17F0 Nissan · Powertrain The TCM detected judder it blames on the CVT itself, usually belt or pulley slip inside… High P17F1 Nissan · Powertrain The TCM caught a judder event it links to the CVT's control valve (valve body), not yet to belt… Moderate
