  1. Open, clear and close firmly

    Open the door or lid and run a finger around the door seal or lid rim – a sock or sleeve caught in the fold keeps the latch from closing. Push the door until you hear a distinct click, then press Start again.

    On a front-loader, look at the plastic hook on the door: it should be straight and spring back when pressed. On a top-loader, check the tab under the front edge of the lid for cracks. A broken or bent strike can't trip the lock, no matter how hard you close it.

  3. Check whether the door sags

    Close the door slowly and watch whether the hook lines up with the slot next to the door opening. If it drags on the bottom edge, the hinge screws may be loose or the hinge worn from children or baskets leaning on the open door.

    Unplug the washer. Clean the slot with a damp cloth and a soft brush, especially on top-loaders where softener splashes toward the rear lid lock. Let it dry before running a cycle.

    Remove part of the laundry and restart. If dC disappears, the drum was packed so tight that clothing pushed the door outward and the switch couldn't confirm the lock.

  6. Test or replace the lock assembly

    With the washer unplugged, the front-load lock is reached by folding back the door seal's outer rim and removing two screws beside the latch; top-load locks sit under the top panel at the rear. A multimeter check of the lock switch, or simply a new assembly, is the fix when the strike and slot are fine.
