Before a Whirlpool washer agitates at speed or spins, it drives a small lock pin into the lid strike (top-loaders) or the door hook (front-loaders) and checks a switch to confirm the lock. F5E2 means that confirmation never came. Whirlpool's help page for top-loaders names an obstruction in the lid-lock area as the likely reason, and for front-loaders a door that isn't fully latched or clothing caught in the opening. When the obvious checks come up clean, the lock assembly itself, its wiring, or a lid strike knocked out of line are next.

Safety first · Consult a professional

Unplug the washer before touching the lock or removing the main top or front panel; the lock is powered from the control with line voltage.

  • Unplug the appliance or switch off the breaker before opening any panel. Mains voltage can kill.

Symptoms

  • F5 E2 shortly after pressing Start, before the washer fills or right before spin
  • Repeated clicking from the lid or door lock as the control retries
  • Top-loader lid closes but the Lid Locked light never comes on
  • Front-load door looks shut but springs open slightly when pushed
  • Washer fills and washes but stops before spin with the code

Possible causes

Ranked by how often each cause is behind this code (editorial estimate).

  1. Item on the lid, clothing or a sock in the lock area, or a garment caught in the front-load door opening 30%
  2. Detergent, fabric softener or lint build-up jamming the lock opening or strike 19%
  3. Lid lock or door lock assembly failed (motor, solenoid or internal switch) 18%
  4. Lid or door not fully closed because the washer is overloaded or the hinge is bent 16%
  5. Lid strike cracked or misaligned after the lid was slammed or leaned on 9%
  6. Lock harness pinched or connector loose; control output fault 8%

Fix it step by step

Diagnostic flow: F5E21Clear the lid and the lock opening2Front-loader: reseat the door3Look at the strike and hinges4Reset the control5Check the lock wiring6Test or replace the lock assembly
  1. Clear the lid and the lock opening

Take anything off the lid – a laundry basket or detergent jug can stop it from seating. On a top-loader, look at the rectangular lock opening on the top deck and pick out lint, a sock corner or dried detergent with a soft brush.

    Tools: Soft brush, Flashlight

  2. Front-loader: reseat the door

Open the door, run a hand around the seal to make sure no sleeve or sock is trapped, then close it firmly until it clicks. If the drum is packed, take some items out – Whirlpool advises leaving room for clothes to tumble.

  3. Look at the strike and hinges

Check that the lid strike (the tab under the front edge of a top-load lid) isn't cracked or bent, and that the lid sits flat without rocking. On a front-loader, the door hook should enter the lock slot centered.

    Tools: Flashlight

  4. Reset the control

Unplug the washer for five minutes, plug it back in and start a Drain & Spin. If the lock now engages and the Lid Locked light comes on, the fault was a one-off.

  5. Check the lock wiring

On top-loaders the harness runs from the lock under the top deck to the control; on front-loaders it runs behind the door boot clamp. With power off, look for a loose connector or a wire rubbed through where the top lifts or the door opens.

    Tools: Screwdriver, Flashlight

  6. Test or replace the lock assembly

If everything is clean and aligned, the lock itself is the likely culprit. Its switch can be checked for continuity with a multimeter against the model's tech sheet; many owners simply replace the assembly, which is held by two screws on most models.

    Tools: Multimeter, Screwdriver

How to reset F5E2

  1. Press Power to cancel.
  2. Unplug the washer for five minutes to reset the control.
  3. Close the lid or door firmly and start a short cycle such as Drain & Spin.
  4. If F5 E2 returns with the lid clear, the lock or its wiring needs attention.

When to call a technician

Get service if a new lock doesn't fix F5 E2, if the harness shows burn marks, or if the lid or door is physically damaged. Never force a stuck lock open with tools while the washer is plugged in.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Whirlpool top-loader lock the lid at all?

High-efficiency top-loaders spin fast enough that an open lid would be dangerous, so the lid locks before spin and during some wash actions. If the lock can't be confirmed, the washer won't go on and shows F5 E2.

Can I bypass the lid lock?

No. Defeating the lock is a safety risk and prevents the washer from running correctly anyway, because the control needs the lock switch signal.

The lid lock clicks several times and then F5 E2 appears – what does that mean?

The control is retrying the lock. Dried detergent or a misaligned strike can stop the pin from sliding in; if cleaning doesn't help, the lock motor is likely weak.

Is F5 E2 the same as F5 E3?

No. F5 E2 means the lock couldn't engage; F5 E3 means it couldn't release. The checks overlap, but F5 E3 often comes from weight on the lid or clothes pressing on the door.
