F21 is the long-drain code on Whirlpool front-loaders of the Duet generation and on Whirlpool-built Kenmore HE washers. The control runs the drain pump and watches the pressure switch; if the tub still isn't empty when the drain timer runs out, the cycle stops and F21 appears, usually with the door still locked. Newer Whirlpool front- and top-loaders report the same fault as F9 E1, so the checks on this page apply to both. On most machines the cause is lint, a sock or a coin in the pump trap, a kinked hose, or a standpipe that can't take the flow.

  1. Cancel, unplug and let it cool

    Press Power or Cancel, then unplug the washer. If it was a hot wash, give the water time to cool before you open anything at the pump.

  2. Find your pump access

    Many newer Whirlpool front-loaders have a small access door at the bottom front with a pump filter and a short drain hose. On many older Duet models the pump's coin trap sits behind the lower front panel, which comes off after removing a few screws. Top-loaders have no user filter.

  3. Drain the tub in stages

    Lay towels and set a shallow pan under the access point. Use the short drain hose if your model has one; otherwise loosen the filter or coin-trap cap slowly and retighten it each time the pan fills. On top-loaders, bail the water out with a small bucket.

  4. Clean the filter or coin trap

    Remove the filter, clear out lint, coins, hair ties and any sock stuck in the opening, and rinse it. Check that the pump impeller turns, then reinstall the filter snugly so it doesn't leak.

    Look for kinks behind the washer. Whirlpool's install guide gives minimum and maximum standpipe heights and warns against forcing extra hose into the pipe – a hose pushed deep and sealed in can cause siphoning and drain faults. Leave an air gap at the top.

  6. Test the drain line and the washer

    Pour a bucket of water down the standpipe; if it backs up, clear the house drain first. Then plug in and run Drain & Spin: steady flow means you're fixed, humming with no flow means a blocked or failing pump, silence means the pump isn't getting power.

  7. Switch to proper HE detergent

    Front-loaders and high-efficiency top-loaders need HE detergent in small doses. Heavy suds cushion the pump and can trigger a long drain on their own; run an extra rinse with no detergent to clear them.

How to reset F21

  1. Press Power or Cancel to clear the display.
  2. Unplug the washer for about a minute, then plug it back in.
  3. Select Drain & Spin and press Start; the door unlocks once the tub is empty.
  4. If F21 reappears during this drain, the restriction or pump fault is still present.

When to call a technician

Frequently asked questions

Is F21 the same as F9 E1 on a Whirlpool?

Both mean long drain – water didn't leave the tub within the allowed time. F21 is used on older Duet-generation front-loaders, F9 E1 on newer Whirlpool washers, and the fixes are the same.

My Duet doesn't have a filter door – where is the pump trap?

On many older Duet models the coin trap is behind the lower front panel. Unplug the washer, remove the panel's screws and drain the tub in stages before opening the trap cap.

Can the wrong detergent really cause F21?

Yes. Regular detergent in a high-efficiency washer makes far too much foam, which slows draining until the timer runs out. Use HE detergent at the dose on the label.

How do I get clothes out when the door stays locked?

The lock releases once the tub is empty and the control allows it. Drain the water by hand through the trap, or clear the fault and run Drain & Spin, then wait a minute or two.
