Samsung Washing Machine Error Sud – Causes & Fix
Not a breakdown: the washer found too much foam and is rinsing it away. Use less, HE-marked detergent.

Sud (also shown as SUdS, Sd or 5ud) is a status message, not a failure. Samsung washers detect excess foam from the way the water level and motor load behave; when there is too much, the cycle pauses, drains, rests and adds rinse water to break the suds down, then carries on. The cycle takes noticeably longer, and on heavily over-dosed loads it can happen several times. Too much detergent, or detergent that isn't HE-labeled, is behind almost every case – but a clogged drain filter keeps the foam from leaving and makes it worse.

Fix it step by step
Let the suds routine finish
Don't cancel the cycle. The washer will drain and rinse the foam away by itself; interrupting it often leaves soapy, wet laundry and a drum full of suds.
Run an extra rinse without detergent
If foam is still visible after the cycle, run Rinse+Spin with nothing in the drawer. Repeat until the drum and door glass look clear.
Cut the dose
Use only detergent marked HE and start with the lowest line on the cap for a normal load; with soft water, half of that is often enough. Pods go in the drum, never in the drawer, and never with extra liquid on top.
Check the auto-dispense setting
On models with a bulk detergent tank, lower the dispense level in the settings or the SmartThings app. Make sure fabric softener hasn't been poured into the detergent tank by mistake.
Clean the drain filter
On front-loaders, open the small cover at the bottom front, drain the water through the short tube and unscrew the filter. A partly blocked filter lets foam build up and is often the reason Sud keeps coming back.

Run Self Clean
Detergent residue in the tub and hoses causes foam on the next loads too. Run Self Clean (or Pure Cycle) with an empty drum and no detergent.
How to reset Sud

When to call a technician
Service is rarely needed. Call a technician only if Sud appears with a correct HE dose, a clean filter and after a Self Clean – then the water-level sensor or its hose may be misreading.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Samsung show Sud when I used the normal amount of detergent?
Dosing lines on bottles are often generous. With soft water, a half load or a high-efficiency formula, the right amount is much less – start at the lowest line and adjust.
Is Sud bad for the washer?
Occasional suds do no harm; the washer handles them. Constant over-dosing, though, leaves residue that causes odors and can push foam into the drawer and onto the floor.
Can I use regular detergent in a Samsung washer?
No. Samsung front-loaders and HE top-loaders use little water, and regular detergent foams far too much. Only HE-marked detergent should go in.
Sud showed up with new towels – why?
New towels and items washed with stain remover can release a lot of surfactant. Wash new towels once with very little detergent, or none at all.
