Sd – which looks like 5d on a seven-segment display, and reads Sud on some models – tells you the Maytag has detected excess suds. Foam cushions the basket, fools the water-level reading and keeps the washer from spinning water out, so the control switches to a suds-reduction routine: it pauses, adds water, rinses and drains, sometimes several times. Maytag's help page traces almost every case to detergent dosing, because HE detergents come in very different concentrations and a full scoop or a large pac in a small load is far more than the washer needs. The cure is less detergent, not a part.

  1. Read the detergent label

    HE detergents are sold in 2x, 4x and 8x concentrations. A cap that's right for a 2x formula is far too much of an 8x one. Maytag points to its own highly concentrated detergent as an example of how small the dose can be.

  2. Match the pac to the load

    Use one pac, placed in the basket before the clothes, and save the larger pacs for heavily soiled full loads. Never add a pac on top of liquid detergent.

  3. Check what else went in

    No-splash or easy-pour chlorine bleach contains thickeners that foam; Maytag recommends a regular liquid bleach instead. Pre-treatment sprays and laundry boosters can also add foam.

  4. Clean out old detergent

    Run the Clean Washer cycle with a washer-cleaning tablet or bleach as your manual describes. Built-up detergent in the tub and hoses releases foam into later loads.

  5. Rule out a slow drain

    If Sd keeps appearing with a small, correct dose, check that the drain hose isn't kinked and the standpipe drains freely. A slow drain leaves foam behind that the control reads as excess suds.

How to reset Sd

  1. Let the washer complete its suds-removal routine – Sd clears on its own.
  2. If you need to stop, press Power, wait for the lid or door to unlock, then run Rinse & Spin without detergent.
  3. For a frozen display, unplug for five minutes and plug back in.

When to call a technician

Is Sd an error or just a message?

It's closer to a status message. The washer has found too much foam and is dealing with it automatically. You only need to act by changing detergent habits.

Why does my new Maytag show Sd when my old washer never did?

Older top-loaders used far more water, which diluted the detergent. A high-efficiency washer uses much less water, so the same dose makes much more foam.

Can I use regular detergent if I use only a little?

Maytag specifies HE detergent. Regular formulas are designed to foam in a full tub of water and can still trigger Sd even at small doses.

Why does foam come out of the dispenser?

Excess suds rise and can push out through the dispenser or vent paths. Cut the dose and run a rinse cycle to clear it.
