uL on a Maytag top-loader means the load is out of balance and, in Maytag's words, the washer could not remedy it by its automated methods and now needs manual intervention. Before showing uL the machine has usually already paused, added water or re-agitated to shuffle the clothes – which is why the time remaining can jump.   1. Rearrange and resume

    Maytag's own instruction is simple: wait for the lid to unlock, redistribute the items evenly around the washplate, close the lid and press Start/Pause. Most uL stops clear with this alone.

  2. Use Bulky/Sheets with Deep Water Wash

    For comforters, sleeping bags and poly-filled jackets, Maytag recommends the Bulky/Sheets cycle with the Deep Water Wash option. The extra water lets the item float and soak evenly instead of pooling on one side.

  3. Don't add water or wet items

    Pouring in a bucket of water or tossing in wet towels mid-cycle upsets the load sensing and often leads straight to uL. Start with dry laundry and let the washer choose the fill.

  4. Level the washer

    Set a level across the top front-to-back and side-to-side. Adjust the front feet and tighten their lock nuts; on models with self-adjusting rear feet, tip the washer forward slightly and set it down so they settle.
