UE (on some displays uE) is LG's unbalance message. Before ramping up to spin speed, the direct-drive motor senses how evenly the wet laundry is spread around the drum; if one side is much heavier, the washer tumbles back and forth to redistribute and tries again. When several attempts fail, it shows UE and either spins slower or skips the final spin to protect the drum bearings and suspension. A single heavy item, a very small load or a washer that isn't level causes the large majority of UE messages – worn suspension parts are the exception.

  1. Rearrange the load

    Press Pause, wait for the door to unlock and untangle the laundry – sheets often roll everything into one ball. Spread items loosely around the drum, then press Start again.

  2. Balance single heavy items

    A lone bath mat or pair of jeans can't be balanced. Add two or three towels of similar weight, or wash rugs and mats in pairs.

  3. Wash bulky items the LG way

    Use the Bedding or Bulky cycle and wash one comforter at a time. Waterproof covers and some pillows trap water in one spot; check the care label and the manual before washing them.

  4. Level the washer

    Put a spirit level on the top, side to side and front to back, and adjust the feet until it's flat. Push on opposite corners – it must not rock. Then tighten each foot's lock nut up against the cabinet.

  5. New install? Check the shipping bolts

    LG front-loaders ship with bolts in the back panel that lock the drum. If they're still in, the washer shakes violently and shows UE on every spin; remove them and fit the caps supplied with the washer.

  6. Test with a mixed half load

    Run a Normal cycle with a half load of mixed towels. If UE or heavy banging still appears, push down on the top of the drum (front-loader) or look at how the tub hangs (top-loader) – a drum that bounces or sags points to worn shocks or suspension rods.

How to reset UE

  1. Press Pause and wait for the door lock to release.
  2. Redistribute or add laundry so the load is even.
  3. Press Start, or select Spin Only to finish the wet load.
  4. UE clears itself once a spin completes; if it persists with a normal load, turn the washer off and on again and check leveling.

When to call a technician

Call a technician if UE shows even with a balanced half load on a level, solid floor, or if you hear knocking, grinding or see the drum sag. Those point to suspension or motor parts, which need a technician to replace.

Frequently asked questions

Is UE a real error or just a warning?

It's a protective warning. The washer is refusing to spin at full speed because the load is too lopsided, which would stress the bearings and suspension. Fixing the load usually fixes the code.

Why does UE show up with a small load but not a full one?

A full load spreads out naturally; two or three heavy items tend to clump on one side. Adding a few towels gives the washer something to balance against.

Can I wash a king-size comforter in my LG?

Many larger LG washers are rated for it, but check the capacity in your manual and use the Bedding or Bulky cycle, one item at a time. An overstuffed drum is a common reason for UE.

My new LG shakes violently and shows UE – what's wrong?

Almost always the shipping bolts at the back are still in place or the feet aren't adjusted. Remove the bolts, fit the caps and level the washer before running another load.
